Biography

Career overview:

Dr Ivan Tot is an Associate Professor at the Department of Business Law, elected as the Head of the Department for the 2022-2024 and 2024-2027 terms.

He completed his master’s studies at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law, in 2007. In 2012, he completed the Postgraduate Specialist Study “Legal and Economic Framework for Business with the EU” at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business, earning the title of University Specialist. In 2012, he further specialised in the field of European private law at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Faculty of Law. He enrolled in the Postgraduate Doctoral Study, specialising in Corporate Law and Commercial Law, at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law, in 2011. He defended his doctoral thesis, which focused on contract, tax, and accounting law aspects of operating leasing contracts in the US, Austrian, German, and Croatian law, in 2016.

From 2007 to 2010, he was employed as a legal trainee at the Hačić & Kallay Law Firm, based in Zagreb, Croatia. From 2010 to 2017, he worked as a teaching and research assistant, from 2017 to 2019 as a postdoctoral researcher, and from 2019 to 2024 as an assistant professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Business Law, where he has been employed as an associate professor since 2024.

At the Faculty of Economics and Business, he lectures and holds seminars on the subjects of Commercial Law, European Contract Law, and Banking Law, as part of the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Programmes in Economics and Business. He also lectures and conducts seminars on the subject Fundamentals of Commercial Law in the Undergraduate Professional Programme in Business. He is the coordinator of the popular-scientific lecture series “Law on Wednesdays”. Since 2012, he has also been involved as an external associate in teaching the subjects of Commercial and Labour Law at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb.


Research areas:

His research interests include the law of obligations, comparative contract law, commercial law, and banking law. He has published extensively in Croatia, e.g. on continuing obligations, late payment, and leasing. For his scientific contribution to the field of law, he was awarded the “Annual Award for Young Scientists and Artists in 2013” by the Society of University Teachers and Other Scientists in Zagreb in 2014. As a co-author of the book Banking and Financial Contracts (Narodne novine, Zagreb, 2017), he, along with the editors and co-authors, was awarded the Recognition of the Dr Jadranko Crnić Foundation for a book of significance for the legal profession in 2017. 


External activity:

He is the editor of the publishing series Hrvatsko obvezno pravo u poredbenopravnom kontekstu [Croatian Law of Obligations in a Comparative Context] and the chairman of the organising committee for the series of international scientific conferences “Zagreb International Conference on the Law of Obligations”.

He has been a member of the European Law Institute (ELI) since 2012. He was elected a member of the ELI Council for the term 2021-2025. Since 2020, he has been the co-chair of the ELI Croatian Hub, which was awarded the ELI Hub of the Year award three years in a row: 2021, 2022, and 2023.
