The origins of The Faculty of Economics & Business, University of Zagreb, date back to 1920 when The School of Commerce and Transport was established marking the year 2020 the institution's hundredth anniversary. The School of Commerce and Transport was founded in order to offer profound theoretical education in the fields of banking, international and domestic trade, transport, consular services and insurance, as well as to train the prospective teaching staff of higher commercial schools, or commercial academies. The enrolments into the six-semester programme increased continually reaching 1,125 students in the academic year 1923/24.
In 1925 The School of Commerce and Transport evolved into The School of Economics and Commerce owing to the advocacy of the then minister of education Stjepan Radić. The prolonged 8-semester study programme granted it the legal status of a university constituent unit, i.e. faculty . The School of Economics and Commerce also conducted the procedure for the acquisition or recognition of doctoral theses in economics and commercial studies.
In 1947 The School of Economics and Commerce became The Faculty of Economics, and in 1956 The School of Business was set up to provide a two year study programme and thus adjust to meet the needs of the practicing business persons. In 1968 The Faculty of Economics and The School of Business merged into The Faculty of Economic Sciences. This institution integrated with the Faculty of Foreign Trade in 1982 under the title The Faculty of Economics in Zagreb.
Today’s premises of the Faculty of Economics & Business, University of Zagreb were in two steps. The original building was completed at the start of the academic year 1952/1953.
