History, Facts and Figures

The Faculty of Economics & Business (FEB) is a constituent part of the University of Zagreb. Its origins date back to 1920 when the School of Commerce and Transport was established in Zagreb to provide fundamental theoretical education in the areas of banking, home and international trade, transport, consular service and insurance. The School of Commerce and Transport also trained the teachers of the secondary vocational schools specialising in trade. The programme comprised 6 semesters and the numbers of students grew continuously reaching 1,125 students in the academic year 1923/24. In 1925 the School of Commerce and Transport grew into the School of Economics and Commerce in Zagreb with legal standing of the university faculty school by the efforts of the then Minister of Education Stjepan Radić. The new School of Economics and Commerce, whose programme was extended to 8 semesters, was also authorised to conduct the nostrification (recognising) processes for doctorates in economic and commercial studies.

The School of Economics and Commerce was transformed into the Faculty of Economics in 1947 and in 1956 the newly founded School of Business offered a two year programme with a curriculum that was adjusted to the needs of the working students. In 1968 the Faculty of Economics and the School of Business merged to form the Faculty of Economic Sciences. In 1982 the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Foreign Trade were integrated into the Faculty of Economics Zagreb.
