Biography

Doc. dr. sc. Ivan Tot was born in 1983 in Virovitica, Croatia.

Assistant Professor and the Head of the Department of Business Law at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics & Business. His research interests include law of obligations, European contract law, commercial law, and banking law.

A fellow of the European Law Institute (ELI) since 2012. ELI Council member (2021 - 2025). Co-Chair of the ELI Croatian Hub since 2020. Member of the ELI Global Private Law SIG since 2019.

Convener of the Zagreb International Conference on the Law of Obligations.

Graduated in law (2007), received a university specialist degree in business and EU law (2012) and earned a PhD in commercial law (2016), from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law. His doctoral dissertation focused on contract, tax, and accounting law aspects of operating leasing contracts in the US, Austrian, German, and Croatian law. Alumni of the Salzburg Summer School "European Private Law", Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Faculty of Law (2012).

He has published extensively in Croatia, e.g. on continuing obligations, late payment, and leasing. Co-authored an awarded book on banking contract law (Bankovni i financijski ugovori, Narodne novine 2017; awarded the Recognition for a Book of Significance for the Legal Profession in 2017 by the Foundation dr. sc. Jadranko Crnić, Zagreb). For one of the papers, awarded the Annual Award to Young Scientists and Artists in 2013 by the Society of University Teachers, Scholars and Other Scientists in Zagreb.

Recently co-edited: Law of Obligations in Central and Southeast Europe (Routledge 2021), EU Private Law and the CISG (Routledge 2021), Digital Technologies and the Law of Obligations (Routledge 2021).
