Biography

Doc. dr. sc. Ivan Tot was born in 1983 in Virovitica, Croatia.

Raised in Đurđevac, Croatia, he moved to Zagreb in 2007, after his graduation at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law. In 2012, he has earned the title of a university specialist in law and economics at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business, after defending his thesis on Combating Late Payment in Commercial Contracts in the EU Law (supervisor: Prof. dr. sc. Zvonimir Slakoper). He is alumni of the Salzburg Summer School "European Private Law" at University of Salzburg, Faculty of Law, generation 2012. In 2016, he has defended his doctoral thesis on "Operating Leasing" (supervisor: Prof. dr. sc. Hrvoje Markovinović) at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law.

From 2007 to 2010 he was employed as a lawyer in Hačić & Kallay Law Firm in Zagreb. From 2010 to 2017 he was employed as a teaching and research assistant, and from 2017 to 2019 as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Law. Since 2019 he is an assistant professor at the Department of Law of University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business. He is a teacher of several courses at Faculty of Economics and Business (Commercial Law, European Contract Law, Banking Law), and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (Commercial and Labour Law).

He has participated in more than 15 conferences, and published more than 30 papers. For one of his papers, he was awarded the Annual Award to Young Scientists and Artists in 2013 by the Society of University Teachers, Scholars and Other Scientists in Zagreb. He is a co-author of the book on Banking and financial contracts ("Bankovni i financijski ugovori", Narodne novine, Zagreb, 2017), awarded with a Recognition for a Book of Significance for the Legal Profession in 2017 by the Foundation dr. sc. Jadranko Crnić.

He is a fellow of the European Law Institute since 2012, and is since 2019 active member of the Global Private Law SIG. He is a member of Croatian Comparative Law Association since 2012, and a member of its Executive Board since 2018. He is also a member of the Department of Legal Affairs and Legal Culture of the Matrix Croatica (since 2016),  and an external associate of the Civil Law Institute of the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law (since 2011).

He is the head of the Organising Committee and deputy of the head of the International Programme Committee of the Zagreb International Conference on the Law of Obligations (December 12-13, 2019) organised in the framework of the celebrations of the UNCITRAL Secretariat for the fortieth anniversary of the CISG, and in cooperation with the Global Private Law SIG of the European Law Institute.
