The departure of Prof. Ivo Bićanić, Ph.D. (1951 - 2021)



Prof. Ivo Bićanić, Ph.D., a longtime professor at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb, passed away on November 27, 2021, at the age of 71. Professor Bićanić, as a full professor, has been a prominent member of the Department of Macroeconomics and Economic Development for over forty years. During his lifespan, he was mostly dealing with topics in the fields of macroeconomics, growth and development theory, economic inequality, and political economy. He is retired since 2016.

Ivo Bićanić received his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb, and his master's degree from the University of Oxford. In addition to the Faculty of Economics & Business in Zagreb, he taught as an associate at St. Anthony´s College of Oxford (1985) and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington (1993–94). He was a visiting professor at the Central European University in Budapest (1996–2010) and the University of Zurich (since 2012).

Prof. Bićanić has published a large number of scientific and professional papers, which have partly resulted from international research projects he has led. He was an excellent translator of classical and contemporary economic works from English (J. M. Keynes, A. K. Sen, etc.). During his career as a university professor, he often commented on current political developments in the country and abroad in Croatian daily and weekly newspapers, at conferences, round tables, and book promotions.  His rich international experience and knowledge he passed on to the generations of his students.
