Kristijan Poljanec, PhD

Career overview:
 

Asst. Prof. Kristijan Poljanec obtained his law degree from the Faculty of Law  University of Zagreb, where he also earned his doctorate on the topic of auction sales. After completing his studies, he worked at the law firm Hanžeković and Partners in Zagreb. Since 2013, he has been working at the Department of Business Law , Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb, where he teaches courses in commercial law, EU internal market law, and digital market law in both Croatian and English.  He has furthered his academic development at the Center for the Study of European Contract Law at Faculty of Law, University of Amsterdam, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Law at Buchmann Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University, Europa-Institut at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, Center for Digital Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Geneva, and International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in Rome.  For his scientific work, he was awarded "Mijo Mirković" Award in the category of young researchers for the paper titled "Opening Bankruptcy Proceedings against a Dependent Company - Effects on the Management Contract of the Company and Contractual Group" (2018) and Recognition from the Dr Jadranko Crnić Foundation for a co-authored book of significance for the improvement of the legal profession titled Private Law of the European Union - Special Part, published by the national publisher Narodne novine (2023). 

He is a member of The International Art Market Studies Association (TIAMSA) and the French Alliance in the Republic of Croatia (L' Alliance Française en Croatie). He speaks fluently English, French, German, and Spanish.

 

Research areas:
 

Asst. Prof. Kristijan Poljanec has participated in twenty scientific and professional conferences and is the author of around forty scientific and professional papers on commercial law, corporate law, contract law, consumer protection law, European law, competition law, bankruptcy law, IT law, foundation and charity law, as well as art market and cultural property law. He is the author of the scientific monograph Legal Theory of Auction, Routledge, 2023. Currently he is working on a book project on the global art investment law, technology, and private law, for which he was awarded a scholarship from the International Institute on the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). 
 

He is a member and president of the Commission for Commercial Law and Practice of the Croatian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce - ICC Croatia. From 2013 to 2017, he participated in the international TEMPUS project European and International Law Master Programme Development in Eastern Europe (InterEULawEast). From September 2019 to April 2020, he participated in the international academic project Corporate Sustainability and Share Capital within the Special Interest Group on Business and Financial Law of the European Law Institute in Vienna. He is the national reporter for the Republic of Croatia on the project The Common Core of European Private Law: Contracts in the platform economy (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven).

He is a member and president of the Commission for Commercial Law and Practice of the Croatian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce - ICC Croatia. He is a member of The International Art Market Studies Association (TIAMSA) and the French Alliance in the Republic of Croatia (L' Alliance Française en Croatie). He actively participated in the work of faculty disciplinary committees, quality assurance committees, and committees for internationalization. From 2022-2024, he was a member of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the InterEULawEast: Journal for International and European Law, Economics, and Market Integrations.
