Biography
Dr Kristijan Poljanec is a Senior Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Business Law at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb. From September 2019 until April 2020, he acted as part-time Research Assistant at the project 'Corporate Sustainability and Share Capital', in the framework of the Special Interest Group Business and Financial Law, established under the European Law Institute, Vienna, Austria. Before joining the Department of Business Law, he was employed as an apprentice-at-law with Hanžeković and Partners Ltd, Zagreb.

He graduated from the Gymnasium Classicum Zagrabiense (2007) and received his law degree (summa cum laude) from the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb (2012). During his studies, he received a Rector's Award for the Best Student Paper titled 'Legal Transactions Involving Tangible Cultural Goods in Light of European and Croatian Law' (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Igor Gliha and Ass. Prof. Hano Ernst). He received his PhD (magna cum laude) in Commercial Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb (supervisor: Prof. Dr. Siniša Petrović). The dissertation was based on comparative research of auction sale laws in US, English, German, Swiss and Croatian Law. 

Member of the organisational and programme committee of US-Croatia Forum: A 21st Century Partnership, a political and economic forum celebrating thirty years of the US-Croatian bilateral relations (April 2022).

He was a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg (2021), Europa-Institut, University of Saarland, Saarbrücken, FR Germany, scholarship programme in the framework of SEE Cluster of Excellence in European and International Law, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (2018), a Cegla Visiting Research Fellow, Buchmann Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University, State of Israel (2018). Participated in the summer course programme 'Contract Law in a Liberal Society', organised by the Amsterdam Centre for the Study of European Contract Law (CSECL) (2016) and Digital Law Summer School, organised by Faculty of Law, University of Geneva.

He was also a guest teacher at the Taras Schevcenko Faculty of Law Kyiv, Ukraine (2017), Faculty of Administration and Economy, University of Isfahan, Iran (2019), Faculty of Tourism and Hotels, University of Alexandria, Egypt (2022) and KIMEP University, Kazahstan (2023), all with the support of the programme Erasmus KA 107. 

In September 2022, graduated from the educational programme of the XIth Academy of the United Nations United Nations and Global Sustainable Development Goals 2030, the Croatian United Nations Association in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

From 2013 until 2017 he served as secretary of the EU funded Tempus Project European and International Law Master Programme Development in Eastern Europe (InterEULawEast)

From 2015 until 2016 he served as Vice-President of Leo District D-126 Croatia (Lions Club International).

In 2018 awarded  "Mijo Mirković" Prize for individual scientific paper in the category  ‘’Junior Scholars up to 30 Years Old’’, for the paper " Opening of Bankruptcy Proceedings Over a Subsidiary Company - Effects on the Contract on Management of the Company's Business and Contractual Concern’’.

He is a member and the president of the ICC Commission for Commercial Law and Practice Croatia, member of TIAMSA – The International Art Market Studies Association and the Croatian Association for Competition Law and Policy. Member of the French Alliance (L'Alliance Française).

His research interests include Auctions Law, Law of Charities and Foundations, Cultural Heritage, Art and Property Law, Commercial  and Company Law,  Digital Law, European Private Law.

He is an author of the research monograph Legal Theory of Auction, Routledge, 2023. 
 
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal InterEULawEast: Journal for International and European Law, Economics and Market Integrations.

He is fluent in English, French, German, Spanish and familiar with Basic Hebrew.
