Brown Bag Seminar

Cycle of the Brown bag seminar continues with the presentation of Assistant Professor Irena Raguž Krištić, PhD (Department of Macroeconomics and Economic Development), which will review work-in-emerging The impact of the European emissions trading scheme on regulated companies in Croatia.

The seminar will be held on September 13, 2018 in Hall 51 starting at 2 PM.

Short summary of the presentation:
In order to achieve its climate goals, the European Union (EU) in 2005 established the so-called "The European emissions trading scheme (EU ETS)”, to which Croatia has access through its EU accession. The aim of this paper is to determine the impact of the introduction of the EU ETS in 2013 on the performance of Croatian companies. Using the dynamic panel analysis and the analysis of the average effect of treatment on regulated companies, the paper examines the impact of EU ETS on the revenues and profits of regulated companies in Croatia basing on data for the period 2008-2016. The results of the analysis show robustly that regulation in the first three years of implementation in Croatia has on average had a significant negative impact on the revenues of regulated companies. Conclusions on the EU ETS's performance on profits are not robust. Dynamic panel analysis strongly suggests that there is no significant EU ETS effect on profits. On the other hand, the results of the analysis of the average treatment effect show the negative effect of EU ETS on profit margins, as well as the undefined effect on EBIT margins of regulated companies in Croatia.
