The lecture entitled “The Sport Tourism Field: A Social-Cultural Perspective” will be held on Monday, 4th April 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Congress Hall of the Faculty. This lecture will provide a broad overview of sport tourism scholarship, focusing on a social-cultural perspective.
Moreover, on Tuesday, 5th April 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Sport Hall of the Faculty, Prof. Derek Van Rheenen will give a presentation about “Goalball” as a sport for students with visual impairments. The title of the presentation is “Envisioning Sport for Students with Visual Impairments: A Blueprint for Post-Secondary Institutions”. It will show a pilot course offered at some universities, which combines learning about disability studies while participating in goalball, a sport designed for individuals with visual impairments, giving in such a way a possible blueprint for other colleges and universities that seek to create similar extra- or co-curricular opportunities in line with (inter)national policy guidelines and goals.
Dr. Van Rheenen teaches courses on sport, culture, and education within UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Education. He directs UC Berkeley's Cultural Studies of Sport in Education (C.S.S.E.) Master's program and serves as Director of the Athletic Study Center.
