It is our pleasure to invite you to a new online Brown Bag Seminar to be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021, via Zoom starting at 2 p.m. The cycle of the Brown Bag Seminars will be continued by Ms. Martina Gottwald Belinić from Friedrich-Alexander University and FEBZG, who will present the paper “Does individual behavior converge to policy recommendations in times of pandemic? Records from COVID-19 in US states ”.
Summary of the presentation:
The COVID-19 pandemic provides a rare opportunity to analyze individual behavior vis-a-vis policy during a global emergency. We use cell phone mobility and COVID policy stringency indices to investigate if mobility behavior converges to policy across the ten largest states in the United States. We conduct structural break and rolling unit root tests on estimated residual of unobserved individual behavior. Our results suggest that behavior is nonstationary and residents' response does not converge to the utility prescribed by the policymakers. The change in behavior captures a risk-averse response with a gradual shift towards a risk-neutral attitude. The results are consistent across the States.

About the presenter:
Ms. Gottwald-Belinic holds a Ph.D. in economics from the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. Her research focuses on how new digital technologies can be applied and absorbed by economies with an emphasis on contemporary China. Her main field is organized around the influence of new trends, assessing the impact of these trends on future labor productivity development, urbanization, social values, and lifestyles. Ms. Gottwald-Belinic holds diverse academic seminars with a focus on transition development in East Asia, especially on the remarkably successful development of the so-called “Chinese Model” of economic transition. Her current research relates to the structural transformation and role of Chinese economic and institutional activities in Central and Eastern European States (CEES). This research is being carried out with a special focus on the perception, influence, and interaction of Chinese investment activities labeled as “soft financing” strategies, as well as on the importance of the integrated and homogeneous approaches of all EU members towards their relationships with China.

Description of the Brown Bag Seminar concept:
The Brown Bag Seminar (BBS) is an informal one-hour workshop with aim of presenting research in different stages of design (ideas, rounded theoretical framework, conducted empirical research, etc.), promoting discussion and creating a stimulating environment focused on the constructive discussion between exhibitors and the rest of participants of the seminar. The basic idea of the BBS is to create a platform where at least once a month, the FEB ZG employees will have the opportunity to present the ideas and articles they work on within their scientific research work. We invite you to respond and help with your constructive comments to exhibitors and expose by yourself the topics you are currently working on, unpublished works or present the research ideas you are thinking about.
The idea is that presentations (in English or Croatian - depending on the presenter's preference) last for 30-40 minutes, and is followed by a discussion.
