Private Accommodation: Good, Bad, Evil?

Private accommodation in Croatia has always had a broader social significance that goes beyond conventional economic understandings. Today it makes the most significant segment of the accommodation offered in Croatian tourism, with a share of over 60% in the total number of beds.

Scientists and professionals often know to emphasize that private accommodation is one of the competitive advantages of Croatian tourism. Private accommodation is an important distinguishing feature of Croatian tourism, which most of the Mediterranean competitors do not have, and at the same time ensures the existence of a significant part of the population. However, scientists and professionals also know to emphasize that the uncontrolled growth of private accommodation can result in the degradation of space as the most important tourist resource, as well as a whole row of other problems, thus jeopardizing the sustainability of the existing model of tourism as well as the general economic development of the country.

Recognizing different standpoints, but also the need to differentiate between various manifestations of private accommodation in contemporary tourism practice, the aim of these discussions is to observe the private accommodation from several important perspectives:

  • What kind of relationship is existing between private accommodation and the real estate market in Croatia?
  • How does private accommodation affect the space and what are its growth limits?
  • Is the current tax treatment good, and does it make sense to treat all types of private accommodation in the same way?
  • How important is private accommodation for the Croatian economy and society as a whole?

The discussion will take place at the Faculty of Economics & Business, University of Zagreb, Hall 3, on Thursday, November 28, 2019, from 12.00 to 14.00.
