Biography
Asst. Prof. Kristijan Poljanec, Ph. D. was born in Zagreb, where he completed elementary school and Gymnasium Classicum Zagrabiense. He enrolled in and completed the integrated undergraduate and graduate law studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, graduating in 2012. During his studies, he received scholarships from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports (academic year 2007/2008) and the Zlatko Crnić Foundation (academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011). In the academic year 2011/2012, he received the Rector's Award for his student thesis on Legal Transactions in Tangible Cultural Goods in the Light of European and Croatian Law, written under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Igor Gliha and Assist. Prof. Dr. Hano Ernst. He was also honored with the Faculty of Law's Recognition for the Best Graduating Student and received a diploma summa cum laude for outstanding academic achievement.

After completing his studies, he worked for seven months at the law firm Hanžeković and partners Ltd. in Zagreb. In June 2013, he joined the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb, as an assistant at the Department of Law. In March 2014, he enrolled in the doctoral program in commercial law and company law at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb. In July 2019, he obtained a doctorate in legal sciences, specializing in commercial law and corporate law, defending his doctoral dissertation on the topic of auction sale, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Siniša Petrović. In January 2020, he was elected a postdoctoral researcher (senior assistant) at the Department of Law, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb (now the Department of Business Law). Since February 2024, he is an assistant professor at the Department of Business Law, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb. 

In September 2022, he completed the XIth United Nations Academy UN and Sustainable Development Goals by 2023, organized by the Croatian United Nations Association and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia.

He pursued further academic training at the Center for the Study of European Contract Law, Faculty of Law, University of Amsterdam (June 2016), the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Law, Buchmann Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University (April 2018), the Europa-Institut at Saarland University in Saarbrücken (September 2018), the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg (July and August 2021), and the Center for Digital Law, Faculty of Law, University of Geneva (June 2023).

Dr. Poljanec teaches mandatory courses such as Commercial Law (Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Studies in Business Economics and Economics), elective courses like Introduction to the Law of the Digital Market (Professional Graduate Study in Digital Marketing), mandatory courses like Fundamentals of Digital Market Law (Professional Graduate Study in Electronic Business in the Public and Private Sectors), elective courses like European Market Law (Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Studies in Business Economics and Economics), and three courses of the University Undergraduate Study Bachelor Degree in Business (BDiB) and Bachelor Degree in Economics (BDiE) - mandatory Commercial Law, elective European Market Law, and elective European Company Law.

He participated in Erasmus teaching mobilities at the Faculty of Law, Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv, Ukraine (2017), the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics, University of Isfahan, Islamic Republic of Iran (2019), the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, University of Alexandria, Arab Republic of Egypt (2022), and the Faculty of Law, KIMEP University, Republic of Kazakhstan (2023).

He took part in numerous conferences, summer schools, courses, and workshops in Croatia and abroad. Dr. Poljanec authored over forty research and professional papers in Croatian and English published in journals, conference proceedings, or as books/chapters in the field of commercial law and company law, contract law, consumer protection law, European law, competition law, bankruptcy law, foundation and trust law, and art and cultural heritage law.
 
He is the author of the research monograph Legal Theory of Auction, Routledge, 2023.

He received the "Mijo Mirković" Award in the category of young scientists under 30 for the paper "Opening Bankruptcy Proceedings against a Subsidiary Company - Effects on the Management Agreement of the Company and Contractual Group" (2018) and the Recognition (as one of the co-authors) of the Foundation Dr. Jadranko Crnić (2023) for the published book of significance for the improvement of the legal profession Private Law of the European Union - Special Part, edited and authored by Prof. Dr. Tatjana Josipović and a group of authors, published by national legal publisher Narodne novine.

He is a member and president of the Commission for Commercial Law and Practice of the Croatian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce - ICC Croatia. He is a member of the Croatian Society for Competition Law and Policy (HDPPTN), The International Art Market Studies Association (TIAMSA), and the French Alliance in the Republic of Croatia (L'Alliance Française en Croatie). He actively participates in the work of faculty disciplinary committees, quality assurance committees, and committees for internationalization. He is a member of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the journal InterEULawEast: Journal for International and European Law, Economics, and Market Integrations.

In addition to his scientific and professional activities, from 2013 to 2017, he participated in the international TEMPUS project European and International Law Master Programme Development in Eastern Europe (InterEULawEast). From September 2019 to April 2020, he participated in the international academic project Corporate Sustainability and Share Capital within the Special Interest Group on Business and Financial Law of the European Law Institute in Vienna. He is the national reporter for the Republic of Croatia on the project The Common Core of European Private Law: Contracts in the platform economy (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven). Since November 2023, he has been the leader of a working group within the project CA22124 - ECO4ALL EU Circular Economy Network for All: Consumer Protection through reducing, reusing, repairing.

He was a member of the organising and program committee of the US-Croatia Forum: A 21st Century Partnership, political-economic event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of US-Croatian bilateral relations (April 2022).

He is fluent in English, French, German, and Spanish.
