TITLE: Towards a convergence of tourism studies and island studies

ABSTRACT:  Island studies and tourism studies have overlapping interests, but there was little interaction between them. This article seeks to facilitate a convergence between the two fi elds. Taking its cue from island studies, the article investigates the role of the metaphors of ‘heaven’ and ‘hell,’ in the specifi c mode of ‘paradise’ and ‘prison,’ on the dynamics of touristic development on small islands. The powerful effect of the metaphor of islands as “earthly paradises“ is brought out, but the very development which the metaphor provoked turned out to be destructive of their paradisiac qualities. Metaphors of ‘hell’ attract thanatourism but have less transformative power. It is argued that ‘paradisiac’ metaphors underemphasize the human aspect of ‘island’ paradises, while island tourism researchers pay insuffi cient attention to the effects of tourism on social change on such islands. It is suggested that greater attention to this issue might be a facilitating factor in the convergence of island studies and tourism studies.

NASLOV: Prema konvergenciji proučavanja turizma i otočnih studija

TITLE: Distorted life cycle on post-socialist Adriatic islands: using the example of Mljet, Croatia
ABSTRACT: This paper investigates the life cycle of Mljet Island in Croatia according to a mod- ifi ed Butler’s (1980) model using the criteria of Lundtorp and Wanhill (2001) applied to overnight stays. Since it represents an example of a war-distorted life cycle, the development of tourism on Mljet was investigated in two life cycles separated by the Croatian War of Independence: (1) the life cycle in the socialist period (1946 – 1991); and (2) the life cycle after the Croatian War of Independence (1993 – today). Research results suggest that without appropriate tourism management and product improvement, the post-war recovery of tourism would not automatically reach the previous level of visitation and that the threat of decline could even reappear in a few years. Although a part of the island is protected as a national park, its life cycle has the usual course and characteristics as other coastal destinations.

NASLOV: Modificirani razvojni ciklus post-socijalističkih jadranskih otoka: primjer otoka Mljeta
To predstavlja primjer razvojnog ciklusa deformiranog pod utjecajem rata, zbog čega se razvoj turizma istražuje u dva zasebna razvojna ciklusa međusobno odvojena Domovinskim ratom: (1) ra- zvojni ciklus u socijalističkom razdoblju (1946. – 1991.) i (2) razvojni ciklus nakon Domovinskog rata (1993. – danas).

TITLE: Impact of labour mobility on selected business performance indicators in hospitality industry in Croatia
ABSTRACT: Labour mobility in tourism, especially in hospitality industry, is generally con- sidered to be quite frequent. The main objective of the paper is to determine how and to what extent labour mobility affects key performance indicators in Croatia’s hotel industry (work productivity, prof- itability and business effi ciency). The data on labour mobility was collected via quantitative survey on a deliberate quota sample. Two hypotheses and corresponding sub-hypotheses have been tested in the paper. Although positive effects of labour mobility on the economy are indisputable, due to the speci- fi city of work in hospitality industry (expressed seasonality and high labour mobility), higher mobility results in rather low business performance. According to expectations, the correlation and regression analysis showed that geographical mobility does not affect labour productivity but that professional mobility impacts both analysed labour productivity indicators.
