Brown Bag Seminar : Prof. Craig A. Depken II, Ph.D.

We invite you to the new Brown Bag Seminar, which will take place on Thursday, December 12, 2019, at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Zagreb in Hall 13, beginning at 2:30 pm.

The Brown Bag Seminar cycle will be continued by Prof. Craig A. Depken II, Ph.D., of the UNC Charlotte University, who will present a paper in the field of sports economics, entitled “Put it in the Mixer! The Value of Corner Kicks in Professional Football".

Summary
Intuition suggests that corner kicks are important in football play, yet questions remain about the impact of corner kicks numbers on match outcomes. This study compares the relevance of corner kicks to shots on target and free kicks. Using 7,368 matches played in the European Big Five and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, we find that both the number of corner kicks and shots on target are significantly associated with match outcomes while free kicks are not.
